After the success of Operation Bagration, the Soviets advanced towards Memel, on the Baltic Sea. This advance soon cut the lines of communication between Army Group North and what remained of Army Group Center. By early October 1944, the Soviets had reached the sea, isolating Army Group North and cutting off its retreat. Guderian wanted to evacuate his troops by sea in order to redeploy them in Central Europe, where the situation was getting worse and worse, but Hitler stubbornly refused: he therefore ordered the 200,000 encircled soldiers to retreat to the Curonian Spit, thinking of using it as a springboard for a future offensive.
The Führer did not realize that what he persisted in calling a bridgehead (der Kurland-Brückenkopf) was nothing more than a death trap for his divisions. Despite this, they withstood six violent assaults before surrendering to Marshal Govorov on 8 May 1945. Most of the prisoners taken by the Russians that day were sent to Soviet camps, and only a minority returned.
Operation Market Garden
Operation Market Garden was the largest airborne operation of all time. General Montgomery had devised a daring plan against the German forces occupying the Netherlands: three airborne divisions would be dropped behind enemy lines to capture and hold the bridges along a 100-kilometer route straight into northern Germany. From the Belgian border, the British XXX Corps could cross the Meuse and Rhine rivers, bypassing the Siegfried Line to reach the Ruhr, the industrial heart of Germany.
Contains 6 Tiger tank figures
The first parachute drops took place at dawn and allowed the capture of the Wall Bridge in Nijmegen, but the German resistance was stronger than expected. The 1st British Airborne Division failed to capture the Arnhem Bridge. Moreover, the marshy ground of the area slowed down the Allied progression. Finally, Eindhoven was liberated thanks to a joint paratroop and armoured assault, but the British XXX Corps was not able to relieve the 1st Airborne Division. The latter fought valiantly around the Arnhem Bridge, but the operation was aborted. Montgomery would not cross the Rhine until the spring of 1945.
