Dien Bien Phu recounts the decisive battle that took place in a remote jungle valley in northern Vietnam.
It was a battle in which both sides knew from the outset that it would be the last stand.
The French were desperate for an opportunity to push the Viet Minh fighting force into battle on their terms. Dien Bien Phu was the trap where superior units and weapons would break the Viet Minh assault.
The Viet Minh felt they could not win the war unless they went to all-out war. The French were too powerful in the delta, but they had massed almost all their best units in a remote valley, without which France would lose its will to fight. Dien Bien Phu was the place where France would suffer a crushing defeat.
It was a battle of preparation, assault and reaction. The Viet Minh dug approach trenches before storming the French fortifications. The overwhelmed defenders had no choice but to throw their reserve battalions into the battle to save their positions.
The game is fast and furious. The Viet Minh player will try to collapse the French defense, and the French player will do everything to hold on.
