Modern Art, an auction game created by Reiner Knizia

Buying and selling paintings can be very lucrative. Five different artists have produced a set of paintings, and the player must be both buyer and seller, hoping to make a profit in both roles.

To do this, he puts a painting from his hand up for auction each round. He receives the money if another player buys it, but has to pay the bank if he buys it for himself. After each round, the paintings are valued according to the number of paintings of that type that have been sold. The dealer with the most money after four rounds is the winner.

You control a world-class museum and hope to earn a pretty penny buying and selling masterpieces of modern art. Over the course of four rounds, each player will have the opportunity to sell paintings at auction. The more popular the artist, the more money you can make on the sale. There are five different types of auction, all requiring different skills. The winner is the one who makes the most money for his or her museum.

Taste is only half the battle. You have to approach each auction with a sharp attitude if you want to come out on top.
While effective hand management plays a crucial role, your path to glory lies in outsmarting the others and not being content with the cards you hold.
