The game covers the exploits of the 1st U.S. Marine Division in the battles for Guadalcanal. The rules are very simple (no combat charts are required) with very few exceptions to remember, yet the game is intended to be comprehensive and includes infantry, tanks and artillery.
Based on years of research, the game system uses a unique suppression mechanism. There are no longer two unique states for a unit, but varying degrees of suppression. This allows suppression to accumulate from multiple sources of fire and means that the unit will not take a morale check until it is called upon to do something. You will never know for sure how your units will react until they are engaged.
While casualties can be caused by artillery and heavy weapons (making them prime targets on the battlefield), squads will never cause significant casualties by firing at entrenched frontline troops from a distance. Their objective is to shoot and maneuver. Sections of the enemy force must be pinned down and eliminated at close range. The system itself forces this realistic gameplay. Similarly, the system rewards you for dispatching your troops and other aspects of realistic gameplay.
Another unique feature of the game is the use of skill and casualty ratings to differentiate squads in areas other than morale.
Old Breed South Pacific is a stand-alone game, but is also part of a growing series of tactical games.
