The German player must decide on the best strategy for the initial invasion: a direct attack across the French border, or an offensive following the “Schlieffen Plan” through less-defended Belgium? Several factors beyond players' control add challenge, frustration and replayability. Will players be able to define their own invasion plans, or will they be forced by the orders of their respective “High Commands” to use a predetermined configuration? Will treaties be signed with neighboring states, influencing the availability of reinforcements? And what about the imminent threat on the Eastern Front? All these elements provide a variable but accurate simulation of the early maneuvers of the First World War.
The game includes 2 x 34“ by 22” maps covering the western frontier of France, Belgium and the North Sea as far south as Switzerland, with a scale of around ten miles per hex. Combat units are mainly army corps, with a few divisions and brigades representing infantry, cavalry and artillery. These pieces represent not only the forces of Germany and France, but also those of Great Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands and even a few Italian units. The terrain depicted on the map is a challenge to navigate, with forces having to use railroad lines to advance more quickly and secure the supplies needed for battle.
1914 Deluxe Hell Unleashed is based on the original 1914 game published by The Avalon Hill Game Company in March 1968.
