Nanolith is a cyberpunk dungeon crawler, with heavy role-playing elements.
The game unfolds in two books (the Encounter Book and the Story Book), which introduce players to the fatalistic story of the four main characters and their quest to recover their lost memories. In the Encounters book, drawings, scenario cards and comic strips tell the story of a human civilization on the brink of extinction. Scenario results, items players obtain during encounters and player decisions link to text sections in the storybook that advance the surprising and creative novel set in the world of nanolith. Depending on player decisions and scenario outcomes, the story's narrative paths diverge considerably.The mechanisms used to bring each character's unique skills to life offer an in-depth tactical and cooperative experience. Through the use of five six-sided activation dice, players can activate special moves, items and skills. But don't fear the misfortune of throwing a hand full of dice! Clever mitigation mechanics that use aggro to manipulate the value of dice rolled ensure that if you really need to boost your most powerful abilities, you can. But every power comes at a price.
The more you push your luck, the more likely your character is to fall. By overusing the nanomachines produced by your body, you'll end up overloading and releasing the power of the nanolith in your DNA. You'll then fall victim to a nano-shock and be able to use your character's own powerful nano-shock ability once for free. But the more you do this, the closer your precious character comes to the threshold between life and death. So choose your weapons wisely.
Most importantly, Nanolith is a narrative adventure game. The world in which this game takes place is unlike any generic sci-fi world you've ever visited. The player's decisions have a major impact on the story, and the prose written for this game is more than just a decorative prop.
