Clad in his distinctive lion pelt the Aquilifer was one of the most trusted men in the legion and a doughty fighter to boot.  The eagle was the very symbol of the invincibility of Rome and to lose one bought disgrace upon a legion,  possibly even resulting in the decimation of the legion.  No wonder the men fought so hard under the gaze of the eagle.

The centrepoint of any Imperial Roman Legion is the Eagle Bearer, the Aquilifer.
