The role of the destroyer in a fleet is to keep pace with other long-range warships and provide an effective screen against small, short-range attackers, such as aircraft, submarines and torpedo boats, although other small warships are also engaged, allowing the rest of the fleet to focus on larger targets.

The J-class included eight destroyers whose names began with the letter J (HMS Jackal, Jaguar, Janus, Javelin, Jersey, Jervis, Juno and Jupiter). The J-class destroyers reversed the trend of the Tribal class, favoring torpedoes over guns.
