Historical background
The Samnite army played a central role in the three Samnite Wars (343-290 BC), marking the opposition between the expanding Roman Republic and the powerful Samnite tribes of central Italy. The Samnites, a mountain people organized into a confederation of tribes, were renowned for their discipline, war strategy and adaptability to the rugged terrain of the Apennines.
First Samnite War (343-341 BC)
Initial conflict marked by Roman victories, but quickly interrupted by the revolt of the Latin allies.
Second Samnite War (326-304 BC)
The most emblematic, with decisive battles such as the humiliating defeat of the Romans at the Caudine Forks (321 BC). The Samnites temporarily dominated thanks to their mastery of guerrilla tactics and mountainous terrain.
Third Samnite War (298-290 BC)
Final conflict in which the Samnites, despite a coalition with the Etruscans, Umbrians and Gauls, were defeated at the battle of Sentinum (295 BC). This war marked their gradual integration into the Roman sphere.
The Samnite army is therefore a symbol of fierce resistance to Roman expansion, combining Greek and Italian influences while adapting to the strategic challenges of the time.
