On to Richmond II: The Union Strikes South covers some of the most famous Civil War campaigns in a single module of the award-winning Great Campaigns of the American Civil War series. Two of the campaigns in this module have been revised, reorganized and rebalanced to improve gameplay, and the third is entirely new:
- On To Richmond II (covering the Richmond campaign of 1862) has benefited from a rebalancing of the base game scenarios and modifications to the rules and victory conditions of the advanced game scenario.
- Grant Takes Command II (covering the 1864 Overland campaign) has had its various basic and advanced scenarios rebalanced as required.
- The Petersburg Campaign (covering the Petersburg Campaign of 1864-1865) is an entirely new module covering the months of mostly open-country battles that began when Grant crossed the James River in June 1864 and ended with the Confederate defeat at Five Forks in April 1865.
The four included maps were created by the original map artist, Charlie Kibler, and have been extensively revised to include all the latest GCACW terrain types, including hills, swamps, dams, trails and landings. A new map area has been added to cover the western part of the Petersburg battles. The military unit counters have been redesigned by Charlie Kibler to recall the counters of the original games in the series, but with a more modern graphic treatment.
Note: both major campaigns require the Stonewall In The Valley cards, which are not included.
The Petersburg campaign includes nine base game scenarios and two advanced game scenarios.
