Build power plants on Catan, weighing up the merits of fossil fuels versus clean energy.
It's the 21st century and
Catan: Energies is at a crossroads. The agrarian society of the island's Viking ancestors has long since disappeared. Today's Catanians need energy to keep society moving and thriving.
Catanians face a crucial choice: spend resources to make their energy greener, or continue with cheaper fossil fuels and risk catastrophic consequences for the island.
You start with cheap fossil fuels that cause polluting events and interrupt resource production. But as you invest in renewable energies, pollution events are replaced by rewards for sustainable strategies. You'll monitor and negotiate with other players to reduce pollution, which affects everyone.
As in real life, the most sustainable player doesn't always win, and as in any CATAN game, there are many paths to victory. But if pollution levels remain too high for too long and the game ends in disaster, the player who has invested the most in renewable energies wins.
In essence, this variant of the CATAN game emphasizes the importance of investing in renewable energies.
