Bowling, also known as jeu de quilles, is a game developed in the mid-19th century in the United States. A game consists of ten frames, the results of which are calculated according to the number of pins knocked down. Each player is entitled to two throws, unless he or she knocks down all ten pins in one go (known as a strike).
If the player knocks down one to nine pins in two throws, he scores as many points as the number of pins knocked down. If all ten pins are knocked down in two throws (called a spare), the player earns ten points, which he keeps in reserve. He adds the points earned on the first throw of the next game. The points from this delivery are then counted twice: once in the current frame and once in the previous frame. If he knocks over all the pins in one go (strike), he's entitled to 10 points for that shot, plus the points earned on the next two throws. The maximum number of points that can be obtained per frame is therefore 30 points, i.e. 3 consecutive strikes.
