Hittite chariots and those of their allies from Arzawa, Masa and Pitassa had three-man crews, usually comprising shieldless driver, shieldless spearman (who probably also had a bow) and a shield-bearer. Against lighter chariots these would attempt to come to close quarters where their long spears and larger crew would have the advantage.
