The Long Road is a wargame including paranormal elements by Mark H Walker, the author of the World at War series inaugurated by Eisenbach Gap.
He has tried to make it an accessible, yet accurate wargame. Everything from advanced sights, multispectral smoke, artillery minefields, electronic countermeasures, anti-tank guided missiles, attack helicopters, and the man-portable air defense systems needed to shoot them down are included. You will command the weapons of the era; Abrams tanks, T-80 tanks, M60A3 tanks, T-64B and Sheridan. Bradleys, M-113, BMP, infantry, spetsnaz, and more.
But of course, war is not won by equipment alone; war is won by soldiers. In The Long Road, training and morale are integral to the game, to the resolution of the battle. But even more important than the rest are the heroes. Those men and women who can turn the tide of battle have also been included. People like Mike Hudson, Colonel Adrik Aleksandrov Shabalin, Tank Commander, Sergeant Matt Dahl and Colonel Commissar Elena Petrova. Heroic humans, but humans nonetheless.
But there is something more. Something that is not "human". Demons that summon electrical storms, rendering advanced weapons nearly useless, Lycantropic clans that fight with assault rifles, RPDs and RPGs, as well as the fangs and claws of their elders. A witch with an agenda, plus the powerful spells to make it happen, and of course, Katarina Ubirek; an amoral Romanian vampire worth dozens of combat-inexperienced soldiers. You know those things you've read about, watched in movies, heard on horror podcasts? Well, in The Long Road, they're real.
But not all scenarios contain nightmares like that. Sometimes you'll fight with/against/against these paranormal beings, but often your battle will consist of nothing more than depleted uranium shells, reactive armor, maneuvers, and massive fires. In fact, you'll find a separate scenario book in the game called Long Road Tactics that includes nothing but scenarios with no paranormal elements.
Each box of The Long Road includes:
- 5 boards of thick (2mm thick) and large (2.54cm square) counters.
- 3 mounted geomorphic maps of 43 x 56cm. No paper, no rigid cardboard, but rather 2mm thick wrapped and supported mounted game boards.
- 27 color action cards. The game is not card driven, it is card assisted.
- Full color rules.
- 4 cards of help to the game.
- 5 ten-sided dice to resolve the battle.
- An impressive number of scenarios.
