Able Seaman Peter Harris has been on watch for three hours. The endless white expanse before him is beginning to play tricks on him. Staring at the vast frozen landscape, he's not quite sure what he's looking for.
The order was to look for "signs of the enemy", but how could he discern anything in this seemingly endless sea of ice? No plume of smoke rose above the frozen walls around him, and the constant shifting and grinding of the pack ice made it difficult to differentiate reality from mirage, a trick of refracted light. Even the telltale roar of the engines was muffled by the huge blocks of ice colliding with each other.
Harris rubbed his eyes, but the world remained a white and blue canvas. As he glanced out again, a gray, dagger-like shape pierced the monotony of color. Without hesitation, he sounded the alarm and the cruiser Albion came to life, sailors rushing to their battle stations. In this moment of silence, Harris could only hope that the enemy had been as unaware of his proximity as he had been. Soon he would find out just how prepared they really were.
