Born on May 27 in 1922 at Zweibrücken.
Who could have predicted that a timid and scrawny boy like Otto Carius would eventually become one of the biggest Panzerwaff e aces, credited with an exceptional tally of 150 victories.
He studies engineering, whilst also being a gifted pianoand violin player.
At the start of the war, he wants to enlist but is considered unfi t for duty due to being underweight and puny.
Finally, during the Spring of 1940, he is allowed to join the infantry, unfortunately being regarded as the laughing stock of his unit. Small wonder he swiftly volunteers for the Panzer units as soon as his company commander mentions such a potential transfer.
After completing the proper drill, he serves on the Eastern Front as a loader in the 20. Panzer Division.
In August 1941, he returns to Germany to try his hand at being a tank driver and to obtain an offi cer’s brevet.
He fails to succeed and is consequently sent back to the Eastern Front in February 1942, spending the rest of that year in intense defensive battles but securing a promotion to Reserve Lieutenant in early 1943. Whilst on leave in Germany, he is selected for training with the all-new Tiger tank.
Starting July 21st 1943, as part of the 2. Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 502 close to Leningrad, Otto Carius’ legend gradually begins to take shape.
In 1951, he is running his very own Tiger-Apotheke (the Tiger Pharmacy).
