World at War 89 - The Crimean Campaign 1941-42 is a two-player strategic scale war game (with strong operational aspects) of low to intermediate complexity covering the fighting throughout the peninsula, which culminated in the German capture of Sevastopol.
The action simulated in the game took place historically between October 28, 1941 and July 4, 1942. The first date marks the entry of the Germans into the Crimea via the Perekop Isthmus, while the second marks the end of the Soviet resistance organized throughout the peninsula. These nine months of the calendar are divided into a number of chronologically varied and unequal turns. This approach conveniently simulates the movements and countermoves of the action that took place due to adverse weather conditions and logistical and command constraints.
The Perekop Isthmus battle, which took place from September 24 to October 27, just off the map to the north, is not included in the game because it took place on terrain too restrictive to allow maneuver on both sides. At that scale, the simulation would have been meaningless.
The magazine, in addition to the articles and the game rules, includes a 56x86cm map and 228 pre-cut counters.
