Create the best expedition map to document the South American landscape.

The objective of Caracas is to create the most valuable expedition map by strategically placing land tiles and uncovering unique areas such as jaguar territories, anteater habitats and rivers with electric eels.

Set-up:

  •      Place the market board in the middle. The market has 4 slots, in a row, each with a symbol).
  •      Give each player a sea tile. Sea tiles have one side where 4 land tiles can connect, each marked with a symbol, the same 4 symbols as on the market board and matching in the same order. (Seas have two sides; use the side that corresponds to the order of the market symbols).
  •     Shuffle all land tiles (squares) and place one tile on each of the 4 market board locations.
Game turns :
During your turns, you place a land tile, adjacent to your sea or adjacent to a land tile already placed, under one of the 4 symbols on your SEA tile (i.e. in one of the 4 “columns” under your sea).
Then take the tile with the same symbol (column) from the market, and place it on top of your sea.
On your next turn, you link this stored tile to your placed tiles, and again take the tile of the corresponding column (symbol) from the market board, which you again store above your sea. And so on.

After each turn, you already know which tile you'll place on your next turn, while the other players have their turn first. So it's a fast-paced game! Even if the puzzle of achieving the highest final score is very complex!

During the other players' turns, you think about your own options for your tile. So you don't feel like you're waiting your turn.
But you'll also see the other players' “puzzle problems”.

Common animals are found on many land tiles, and score 1 victory point if their specific scoring rule is respected.
Rare animals are each found on a single land tile, and score 2 victory points if their unique scoring rule is respected. (So you don't specialize in certain animals and ignore others. Every victory point is important and, as the game progresses, the puzzle of scoring all the points becomes increasingly difficult).
For the landscape (Jungle / Savannah / Swamp / River Basin), you compare the players' expedition cards to get the most victory points. For example, the player with the most separate savannah areas gets the most savannah points, while the player with the fewest separate swamp areas gets the most swamp points.
Dead-end rivers (i.e. rivers connected to land on another tile) on your expedition map earn 1 point less each.
