Black Seas : 6th Rates Squadron (Battened Down)

The 6th Rates Squadron was the smallest warship in the Royal Navy's classification system, which would have been generally adopted around the world. This category covered ships with 20 to 28 guns on a single deck.

Although not considered powerful enough to take their place alongside the larger ships of the line, they performed well in their other duties and participated in smaller engagements where 1st and 2nd rate men-of-war were not needed. Among the well-known 6th rates is the fictional ship HMS Surprise, commanded by author Patrick O'Brian's Captain Jack Aubrey, while C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower takes command of HMS Atropos in one of his novels.
