Major artist of the twentieth century, almost as famous as Picasso whose friend he was, Marc Chagall (1887-1985) is a painter of the "surreality", as Apollinaire noted. His work, shrouded in sacredness, is inspired by the Jewish tradition that bathed his childhood. Exiled from Russia and settled in France in 1925, Chagall became a member of the École de Paris, which brought together foreign artists in the capital of the arts. His colorful paintings are both dreamlike and poetic, despite a life marked by uprooting and the trauma of two wars.
