Master of impressionism, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) is essentially a painter of figures. While he first worked in the open air alongside Monet, he then returned to the study of the masters, particularly those of the 18th century, who had a great influence on him. He painted many nudes and portraits. Painter with a sensual touch and a luminous palette, he is, in the popular imagination, associated with the themes of women and children. He knew how to give a happy image of the family universe.
Moulin de la Galette Ball:
This is arguably Renoir's most important work of the mid-1870s and was exhibited at the 1877 Impressionist Group exhibition. Although the painter chose to depict some of his friends, his main concern was to capture the lively and joyous atmosphere of this popular establishment on the Butte Montmartre. The study of the moving crowd in a light that is both natural and artificial is treated with vibrant and colorful touches. The feeling of a certain dissolution of forms was one of the causes of the negative reactions of the critics of the time.
This painting, with its subject anchored in contemporary Parisian life, its innovative style and its imposing format, a sign of the ambition of Renoir's approach, is one of the masterpieces of early Impressionism.
